Janet Devlin ‘wasn’t isolated by X Factor mentor’

Axed X Factor hopeful Janet Devlin has denied reports that her mentor, Kelly Rowland, isolated her.

Speaking to Digital Spy after leaving the programme, the singer said “that’s really not true” when she was quizzed about the rumours. She added: “They like to make up their own little stories, don’t they?”

Janet said she had a “great” relationship with Kelly and the other girls in her category. The youngster said she is a “bit of a loner” and knows that she can be quite difficult to talk to, but the other girls made a real effort with her.

“I’m incredibly grateful for Kelly giving me this opportunity,” Janet said humbly.

The singer said she was feeling “excited” when she exited the show because there are so many more opportunities out there for her now and even Jessie J said she believed it was a good thing that she left, as her style isn’t pop. People looking at the X Factor betting may agree with this.

“I’ve had enough time to get my name out and it’s been a great platform,” Janet explained.

The teenager was also quick to defend claims that Kelly favoured Misha B and Amelia Lily in the competition.

She explained that Kelly connected better with them and “people have confused that with favouritism”. Janet said though that she and her mentor connected on a personal level “and that was totally fine”.

Janet landed in the bottom two at the weekend, following a couple of fairly dismal performances on the show. The youngster forgot her words halfway through MMMBop, causing all of the judges to criticise her and they didn’t seem much happier after she did her second song, Under The Bridge – the Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ classic. Anyone looking at the X Factor odds should bear this in mind.

So it was fairly predictable when they chose to save Misha over Janet – even Louis didn’t favour the Irish singer for once!

The Fast Show is back!

Paul Whitehouse is a household name in British comedy. He and old friend Charlie Higson created The Fast Show, the comedy which revolutionised sketch shows back in the mid-1990s. Now, the pair has teamed up to bring the famous old show back to our screens. Our computer screens, that is.

Whitehouse and Higson have teamed up with Arabella Weir, John Thomson, Caroline Aherne and Simon Day for a 12-episode online series which began on November 10. The series features all the classic characters and one-liners and is sure to be a hit with fans of the show.

Whitehouse, a university drop-out, fell into comedy by chance. He worked as a labourer, along with Higson, on a house shared by comedians Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry, from who they gained inspiration. From there, Whitehouse and Higson moved to the same estate as Harry Enfield and the rest is history.

They began writing credits for Vic Reeves’ Big Night Out and Harry Enfield’s Television Programme, before hitting on an idea of their own. They took the basis of Enfield’s comedy concept and turned it into a slicker version with a vast array of characters and catchphrases, including “Suit you, sir!” and “Does my bum look big in this?”

The Fast Show ran for three series from 1994 to 1997, with a three-part Last Fast Show Ever in 2000. Eleven years on, the show is back with fresh material and is a must-see as far as funny video clips on the net go.

Whitehouse has picked up characters like Rowley Birkin QC, Ron Manager and estate worker Ted as if he has never been away, while Aherne slips back into the show seamlessly. The gags just don’t get old.

The loveable host of Strictly

Bruce Forsyth is a man who needs no introduction to British television viewers. He’s been entertaining the nation on a Saturday night for as long as we can all remember.  He made his television debut as a child on a talent show in 1939, so he’s been on TV nearly all his life.

Back in the 1970s it was as host of the game show the Generation Game. He then went on to present other shows like Play Your Cards Right and The Price is Right.

But younger viewers may only know the recently knighted Sir Brucie in his role as host of Strictly Come Dancing, and they may be a touch perplexed when he yodels “Nice to see you…” and the audience all call back “to see you nice!” Anyone following the Strictly Come Dancing odds will know about this.

After a quiet period without Bruce on British screens during the late 1990s, he made his comeback with a stint as a guest presenter on Have I Got News For You in 2003.  He obviously impressed the right people at the BBC, because just a year later he started as host on the new show Strictly Come Dancing. Bruce has a lifelong love of dancing – when he was a child in Edmonton, he used to watch his hero Fred Astaire dancing on the TV.

Bruce’s appearance in a Christmas TV ad for Morrison’s has caused a flurry of interest as the first airing of the ad went out last week, halfway through Strictly’s rival show the X Factor. Those looking at the Strictly Come dancing winner odds may have been surprised by this.

Out of the limelight, Bruce has six children – five daughters and one son.  He loves golf and lives in Virginia Water, close to Wentworth Golf Club. He has been an Arsenal supporter since childhood, and also supports Tottenham Hotspur.

One of Bruce’s best known catchphrases goes down well with all the dancers on Strictly – “Didn’t they do well?” This is the ninth series of Strictly, and Bruce was ever the professional host, reassuring Chelsee Healey that her modesty remained intact when she feared that her dress had revealed more than just her cleavage.

Hairdresser with a big heart

Marcus Collins wants to win X Factor – of course he does, or why would he be taking part?  But, unlike some of the other contestants who want to do it for the glory, big-hearted Marcus wants to do it for his mum.

Collins was brought up on Waterloo estate, Merseyside, by his mum Ann.  His dad left home and Ann had to raise her son all on her own. Marcus sees winning the X Factor as a way to make life easier for her.  In an interview with the Sun he said: “It’s been a struggle. This could change everything for me and my family. I wouldn’t have to scrimp and get by.” People looking at the X Factor betting should remember this.

His boss at the hairdressing salon is fully behind Marcus – saying all the clients love it when he sings at work. Those following the X Factor winner odds should remember this.

Collins’ rendition of Reet Petite won him the top spot in Digital Spy’s poll for which X Factor contestant performed the best club classic on Bonfire Night.  Collins’ version of the Jackie Wilson classic got 36.5 per cent of the votes, and Little Mix came second with 17.6% for their song – Don’t Stop the Music by Rihanna.

Like fellow contestant Craig Colton, Marcus is openly gay, and hasn’t let the jibes made a few weeks ago by eliminated group Nu Vibe bother him. Just after their exit from the show, the boy group attacked the two solo acts for being ‘bum boys’.

On last week’s show, Marcus sang Another One Bites the Dust by Queen, but the judges weren’t so keen on his performance.  Tulisa slammed it as ‘predictable’ and Kelly Rowland suggested he needed more ‘freedom on stage’.  Despite the judges’ opinions, Marcus is still tipped as one of the favourites to win the contest, with odds of around 3/1.

Strictly a hero

When Strictly’s Artem Chigvintsev was forced to pull out of the show because of his back injury, New Zealander Brendan Cole was quick to step into Artem’s shoes.

Now Brendan is well-known to Strictly Come Dancing fans and dance fans generally throughout the UK – and, let’s face it, he’s a lot more fun than Artem.

But he was quick to say that the circumstances weren’t welcome, saying “it’s never nice under the circumstances, but I’ll do my utmost to help him and Holly out.”.

Specialists discovered that the damage to Artem’s spine wasn’t as bad as had previously been feared. But he still had to rest, paving the way for Brendan to partner Australian star Holly Valance. Those looking at the Strictly Come Dancing odds should remember this.

Artem had been diagnosed with a transverse process fracture of the lumbar spine at first. But the latest news indicates that he’s suffering from a combination of joint and soft tissue injury.

The ex-Neighbours actress Holly, 28, and Artem, 29, scored 34 points from a possible 40 with their jive on Bonfire night, as Artem danced on through the pain barrier. Anyone looking at the Strictly Come Dancing betting will have been impressed.

The following week, Holly and Brendan did a Rumba number, to Artem’s choreography. The dance looked like an excellent match for Holly’s abilities, as there wasn’t too much footwork involved!

Holly’s overall effort lacked a little pizazz – but it did include her having a go at the splits at one point (though in a rather “limited” way!).

Nevertheless, she scored well yet again partly because she was so expertly shepherded by Brendan.

Brendan has appeared on all the Strictly Come Dancing series and has been known to clash with the judges over their marks and comments. He’s also broken the dancing rules deliberately now and again, which is why the New Zealander has something of a reputation as Strictly’s bad boy.

Audley hits the canvas

Heavyweight boxer Audley Harrison suffered a Strictly Come Dancing knockout blow on Saturday as the TV audience voter the popular sportsman off the show.

Forty year-old Audley, from Harlesden, who became the first ever British boxer to win a gold medal in the superheavyweight division at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, was decked by star gazer Russell Grant whose dancing was undoubtedly inferior to Harrison’s. Those looking at the Strictly Come Dancing betting may have been surprised.

But as we know, it’s not about dance quality so much as popularity, and Russell’s brave but inept performance seemed to capture the nation’s hearts a little more than the 6 feet 5 1?2 inch, 18 and half stone pugilist. Although no lightweight himself, for his size, the diminutive Russell Grant has 10 years on the boxer and the astrologer’s partnership with Flavia Cacace was sufficient to carry the day. Other likely losers, Anita Dobson and Robin, Alex Jones and James, just about did enough to stay in. People looking for Strictly Come Dancing tips should remember this.

Audley undoubtedly leaves the competition as something of a hero; he’s certainly better known and better liked than when this Strictly series started. He remained positive and friendly to all the whole way through the competition. His ballroom dances were amazingly elegant for such a big man and his Latin-American dances were thoroughly entertaining.

The sportsman certainly never let himself down; doing his utmost to take the dances seriously and truly showing his agility throughout.

He displayed a great attitude to the entire competition and will be sorely missed.

Audley’s departure now leaves Anita Dobson and Robin, Alex Jones and James and Russell Grant and Flavia looking the most likely to face the heave-ho from the nation’s Strictly viewers. Harry Judd and Aliona and Jason Donovan and partner Kristina remain favourites to win the top prize.

X Factor’s Kitty Brucknell: I wish I’d never been an impersonator

X Factor contestant Kitty Brucknell has confessed she wished she never performed as an impersonator, even though it allowed her to follow her dream.

The 26-year-old, speaking to The Sun, said she believes the job hampered her singing career.

“You know what – sometimes I wish I’d never done that stuff,” she said, adding that all people say about her now is that she is a Britney impersonator.

“I’m a singer, I want to sing but I’ve never been able to get away from that,” Kitty explained, saying that she hoped her stint on The X Factor would help her to move on from that.

As she used to be a Lady GaGa impersonator too, she admitted that singing Edge of Glory when she was in the bottom two sing-off was a “safe” option for her. Those placing an X Factor bet should remember this.

“I know those songs inside out and back to front so it made me relax for what was quite a crucial moment,” the wannabe said.

Kitty, who has been branded ‘fake’ by many viewers this year, told The Daily Star earlier this week that she is not acting on the programme.

“Believe me, there are people in here who are fake, but I’m not,” she explained. “Each year, there is one person picked on as the panto villain, but that’s fine. It’s not something that’s important to me.”

She said she doesn’t care about the people who hate her, because there are people out there who love her and they’re who she’s concentrating on.

The hopeful also revealed that the bullying stories are either “rubbish” or “exaggerated”. While there have been bust-ups in the house, she said it’s to be expected because it is a competition and all of them are in it to win it!

That hasn’t stopped the rumour mill spinning, particularly when it comes to which of the overs Louis Walsh claimed Misha B was bullying – Kitty’s still the person who most people’s money is on…

X Factor’s Johnny Robinson ‘would love to perform duet with Shirley Bassey’

X Factor hopeful Johnny Robinson has revealed he would love to perform alongside Dame Shirley Bassey.

The contestant said he has covered the Welsh singing legend’s numbers as part of his drag act for a number of years and he would love to do a duet with her now. Those looking at the X Factor betting may wonder if this will happen.

Speaking to the Press Association, the singer said his “dream collaboration” would be with Dame Shirley because “she’s amazing”.

He added that he’d love to perform with “someone who’s got longevity”, like Tina Turner or Kate Bush. Johnny also revealed that he’d be happy to do a duet with Elton John, as well – he sets his heights fairly high!

The hopeful also said how thrilled he was to be complimented by Kylie Minogue after he performed her track Can’t Get You Out Of My Head on the show.

“A pop princess, I should say! I was well smitten,” Johnny said. “I love a bit of Kylie.”

Johnny impressed the judges with his rendition of I Believe In A Thing Called Love by The Darkness on Saturday night.

Despite usually slating his performances, Gary Barlow admitted that he loved the performance he did on Saturday, while Kelly Rowland described him as her “guilty pleasure”. “I don’t know if I can see you selling records but I know for darn sure I love to watch you and I have a good time,” she added.

Johnny said he had been “a bit worried” about the song choice beforehand and was “gobsmacked” by the response he got.  People following by the X Factor winner odds should remember this.

And while he isn’t high up on the bookies’ favourites list, he’s by no means at the bottom either, so he may hang on in the competition for a few weeks longer.

Chris De Burgh takes to Strictly

Dubbed ‘everyone’s favourite singing sensation’ By ‘Strictly Come Dancing, It Takes Two’ host Zoe Ball and absolutely no one else, ever, Chris De Burgh was on the show last week to talk about how he’d not seen any of Strictly Come Dancing as he’d been busy promoting his NEW ALBUM. So he was unable to make any relevant comments about Strictly Come Dancing, but he was able to discuss his NEW ALBUM at considerable length.

Nice one Chris. I had thought I wanted to watch a show about Strictly Come Dancing, but you in your infinite wisdom knew better and decided that I wanted to watch some old gimmer bang on about his NEW ALBUM instead. I hope you got paid heartily for this service to our screens, you absolute saint, you. Those looking at the Strictly Come Dancing betting should remember this.

De Burgh did make a half-hearted attempt to pretend he knew something about the show and wasn’t just there to talk about his NEW ALBUM, however, by wittering some dull nonsense about Paso Dobles and Salsas. He might have been talking about Pringles and salsa though; I had lost interest by this point.

Ex Conservative MP and former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Anne Widdecome was slightly better value for money, commenting on her former dance partner Anton Du Beke’s current partner Nancy Del’Olio as being better than she. Not a hard feat, if anyone remembers Anne’s valiant, but ultimately ungainly, attempts when she appeared in the competition some time ago.  People looking for Strictly Come dancing tips should remember this.

‘Miranda’ actor Tom Ellis was also there saying something about rumbas and jives, but we were too busy looking at his pretty face to pay all that much attention to the words.

Janet Devlin’s boyfriend ‘pleased’ with her X Factor success

X Factor hopeful Janet Devlin’s boyfriend has described the young singer as “incredible”.

Speaking to Star magazine, 17-year-old Brendan Dally admitted that he loves watching his girlfriend on the show and is “so pleased” she’s doing so well.
“Getting to come to London and see her on stage is amazing. I’m so proud of her,” the teenager said.

Janet, 16, recently revealed that while her boyfriend is quite musical, he isn’t a huge pop fan, so he’s not been impressed by the songs she has performed so far on the programme!

Discussing how she felt about having to leave her boyfriend behind in Northern Ireland to pursue her dream, Janet said: “Obviously, we miss each other.” But she admitted her beau was “so supportive” and he is backing her to do well in the competition.

So far, Janet has had a lot to contend with since appearing on the talent show. In the second live shows week, her granddad died and she chose to stay and perform, rather than going home for his funeral.

She admitted that Sami Brookes had been like a mother to her during that time and she cried when the singer was booted out of the competition last week, after Louis Walsh chose to put Kitty Brucknell through. People following the X Factor odds may have been shocked by this.

Janet said she was “over the moon” to be through to the next live show, but added: “On the flipside, I’m devastated Sami’s going home, when times were really hard, she was there for me.”

It looks like the youngster will have to watch a number of other people come and go in the competition, particularly if the bookies’ odds are to be believed. Janet is one of the hot favourites, along with The Risk and Misha B, to win the 2011 show.
